Salut!

Although iron man usually refers to triathletes, the definition (a man of unusual physical endurance) could not be more fitting for my time at the World Cup Jamboree in Quebec. After taking the red-eye and arriving on Monday morning I had the day to prepare the hectic few schedule ahead. Here’s how things unfolded for me.

Tuesday: First day of practice
on the Slopestyle course. I show up and immediately think “what have I
gotten myself into?” The three jumps in a row were all bigger than any
of the jumps that I’ve hit this year thanks to my fib-tib joint injury. I
wasn’t sure how it would fare if I came of short or went too far on the
jump. Therefore when practice began I took the time to really studied
the other riders to determine how much speed I needed. Many of them were
struggling to get enough speed for the jumps, not exactly instilling
confidence in me. Once I did hit the jumps I was also having issues with speed (surprise surprise). It was a little bit windy, and being a
light guy I naturally felt like a feather in the wind. After a few runs
I got the speed for all the jumps (by tucking in!) and got some decent
tricks on the rails. Not a great first day but baby steps to build my
confidence back up.
That afternoon I received confirmation that I had a spot for Big Air. We had practice in the evening with Qualifiers set for the following night. A common struggle for both events was that speed was an issue for a lot of the riders. I debating skipping the practice to save my knee but decided that I should at least try a couple of jumps so that I wouldn’t go into the competition cold turkey. Luckily I made the jump fine and got a feel for it. Just enough to build some confidence for the next night.
Wednesday: We woke up to a beautiful day on Wednesday - sun shining and almost no wind (albeit it was still -15). I got into a great zone riding the Slopestyle course! I landed my first switch backside 9s of the season. I knew I should probably take it easy and save energy for the comp but heck, I was feeling it! I tried some frontside 900s. I landed a couple but was having trouble looking past the spotting point for a front 7 and thus keeping the spin smooth. It was still nice to get some bigger spins going and overall it was a great practice.

The forecast for Thursday’s Slopestyle didn’t look good. Wind and blowing snow. I knew that having the best wax possible could make the difference between me making the jumps and coming up short. I made it my mission to find the perfect wax. After calling MEC they directed me to another shop which was a half hour walk away. I didn’t have a ton of time (this was at 3pm and the Big Air started at 7) so I set out on a fast pace to find the key ingredient, fluorocarbon wax, to allow me to send it over the jumps. Although it’s ridiculously expensive, the $150 I spent was a solid investment in my health and performance for both competitions.

Welcome to the wonderful world of waxing...

Fast forward, all waxed up and ready to go for the Big Air. I can’t land anything in practice. Nothing is working. I’m second guessing my approach, then when that doesn’t work I keep trying different things. This is pretty bad for my confidence so I decide to go for an easier trick in the competition–one that I know I can land. Sometimes I need the pressure of the competition to snap out of a funk and perform. When the chips are on the table I usually get into this amazing zone where I’m so focused on executing my tricks perfectly that fear and doubt evaporate. I was almost there on my first run–so close to landing my trick but I over rotated a bit losing about half my points. Now the pressure was really on! I used the pressure to help me get into the zone. It all came together and I stomped my trick! Check out the video below. That was good enough for a personal best 17th place at a World Cup Big Air.
Thursday - No rest for the wicked. We had Slopestyle qualifiers the next day! The weather was as expected, bad, which made it very difficult to clear the middle jump. Our speed all depended how much the wind was blowing during our runs. Thankfully I was able to get enough speed during my last run of practice, giving me a small bit of confidence. On my first judged run I landed my first trick, a switch backside 9. Then I landed a front 7 on the difficult middle jump (albeit it wasn’t pretty). Followed by a nice backside 5. Next the rails, I landed my first trick a gap to frontside boardslide 270 out. I must have lost my focus on my last rail because I fell on my trick (a 50/50 front 3) that I had been landing all day. I locked in on the wrong side of the rail and had to try a different spin out which resulted in a fall. It was tragic to fall on the last feature! On my second run I was fired up to try a backside 7 since my back 5 went so well. In retrospect this wasn’t the best choice since I hadn’t practiced it. I was close to landing it but I landed backseat and put my hands down. That was the end of my hopes of achieving my goal of making the semi finals.

Competition day weather seems to never be ideal but everyone has to deal with the same conditions

It was a tough contest for me. However instead of getting down on myself I’m using this as motivation to do better next time. I’m incredibly motivated again and finally fell healthy enough to push my limits on snow. I can’t wait to learn the tricks that I’m missing (cab and backside spins) as well as progressing the ones I’m naturally good at into better tricks like a switch backside 10 and 12. I have a bit of time to work on my tricks until mid March when I’ll have 4 - 5 competitions in 3 weeks!

Congratulations to my friends who nailed it in Quebec! Darcy Sharpe won the Big Air with an insane Switch Backside 1260. Mikey Ciccarelli won the Slopestyle with a smooth top to bottom run. Check out their videos below.
I’m writing this from the airport in Vancouver on my way to my sixth (and possibly seventh) World Cup events! As you are may know I’ve been having some issues with my knee this season, more specifically with my fib-tib joint. My physiotherapists and I have been experimenting with taping, strapping, orthotics, different boots, and different bindings. I’ve even tried working out in my snowboard boots to see if that brings on any pain. Guess what? It doesn’t! It’s a finicky injury and I'm learning how to manage it better everyday. I’m excited that things are moving along with the recovery. I’ve had some great days riding in the past couple weeks. Some of them were completely pain free which is huge.
As much as we try to plan ahead with goals and schedules snowboarding has a way of keeping you on your toes. This year I was planning on focusing more on the Open events–the Burton US Open and Burton European Open. However the organizers of the TTR World Snowboard Tour decided to change things up this year and make those events a part of the exclusive Elite series. I don’t particularly like this decision. It makes it more difficult for up and coming riders to break into the elite group of competitive snowboarders. By making it more exclusive at the top it gives less riders opportunities and will likely result in less people competing.

Luckily for me I had the opportunity to qualify for the World Cup in Turkey which in turn helped me qualify for this World Cup in Quebec. So instead of focusing on the Open events as my high level contests this season I’ve switched my focus to the World Cups. Given my lack of sending it (jumping big jumps) this season I’m not expecting any spectacular results here. In my two previous starts in World Cup Slopestyles I did not land a full run. Therefore it would be a personal victory if I land a clean full run even if it doesn’t include very technical tricks. Wish me luck!
The jump was great and allowed the riders to land very technical tricks... tricks that a couple years ago would have made podium weren’t even making the finals! So as you can imagine it was a pretty heated competition. My front 9 simply wasn’t technical enough to crack the top 10 or even the top 20. After the competition was over for me I took advantage of the few hours I had before the finals started to take in some of Istanbul. I couldn’t believe how big the city is... 17 million people officially live in it and closer to 20 million unofficially. Istanbul straddles the boarder of Asia and Europe so I’ve officially been to Asia now. The culture and food in Turkey was amazing to experience... even if it was in what I’ve coined as a tourist blitz.
Greetings!

It has been a crazy, challenging start to my season. With snowboarding things never quite go as planned. You have to constantly adapt to changes in snow conditions around the world, changing competition schedules and injuries. I’ve been juggling all three this fall! Now it's coming down to the wire with a World Cup Big Air in a weeks time. It seems like a perfect opportunity to challenge myself to overcome adversity!
The first and foremost being a knee injury that I suffered last spring. I went too large on a jump at a training camp in Whistler–like 50 feet past the start of the landing too large. Luckily I was able to land the jump but the impact was enough to sprain my knee.

I spend a lot of time in physio clinics. One thing I've learned is that everything is connected in the body. My knee could be restricted from tightness in my foot, my calf, my hamstring, my hip or most likely some combination of all of them.

In the following months I saw doctors, knee specialists and physiotherapists. I was able to get an MRI which showed that I was clear of any major ligament damage - woohoo! However this injury, which is primarily a sprained/slight dislocated tibia fibula joint, has been a difficult one to get to the bottom of. It’s an uncommon injury and is often misdiagnosed. My doctor suspected a hairline fracture to my tibia plateau and prescribed 6 weeks of rest, AKA limited impact. I took his advice and took it easy in the spring. However when I tried skateboarding after the rest period I immediately felt pain in my knee. There was something more going on. That was around the start of summer. Fortunately I was able to ease back into dryland training and by the end of the summer I was doing full on trampoline training with no pain. It seemed like it was game on!
So I headed over to Europe with a great plan for early season riding! Similarly to my skateboarding experience, I immediately knew something wasn’t healed when I got back on snow in October. For some reason my knee was fine running, trampolining or weight training but didn’t like being in snowboard boots. So thus began the quest to figure out what I needed to do to get it better and ready to send it on my board.
Since then I’ve seen numerous physical and massage therapists, all with a slightly different idea of how to get my knee better. In the end I was told to get it really strong as well as work on flexibility. Instead of hitting the slopes hard in November I was hitting the gym harder than ever. But that wasn’t enough. My equipment was also deterring my full recovery. I reached out to my the Austrian sales rep from my new sponsor Salomon Snowboards to get a new, softer pair of boots and bindings. The man in charge, Tom Recheis, was amazingly helpful–especially considering he’s never met me! He got me all sorted out. With the new boots and stronger legs my knee started to feel good enough to ride the park by the end of November.
At this point I had committed to going to the Snowboard World Cup İstanbul. It was just 2 weeks away and I had to make a tough decision... I was originally planning to stay in Austria to keep training there until the World Cup. However the park was closing in early December and my friends were leaving. So I decided to go to Colorado for some last minute training with my coach Joe McAdoo and the Whistler Valley Snowboard Club. Trips like this do not run cheap! This one ended up particularly expensive because of a booking error with Orbtiz–I had to buy a new ticket at the airport because the name on my ticket was wrong. I am very grateful to have the support to be able to get to the places I need to ride when I need to be there. To my sponsors and support team from my campaign www.makeachamp.com/andrew, THANK YOU, you are amazing!
Alas, another setback... Two days before heading to Colorado my neck (which had been tight for a few weeks) decided it had had enough and seized up. I was able to get some advice from a doctor (side note: the medical system in Austria is great! In and out of emerge with X-rays in 45 minutes). He suspected that it should clear up within few days up to a week. Which it did... until I had a little fall here last Tuesday which put my neck back in the acute spasm phase. When it rains it pours!

So that pretty much brings you up to speed. My neck is getting better and I'm hoping to at least get a couple days of jumping in before heading across the world to Turkey. They say the best athletes thrive under adversity. I had one of my best performances ever at the Canada Games when a knee injury sidelined me for a month prior to the contest. I had it taped up for the competition and was able to ride well enough for 5th place. Let’s hope I can pull something out for this one too! It’s going to be a sprint to the finish and a Hail Mary! Wish me luck :)
Hey everyone!

I just launched a new fundraiser campaign on the webpage: www.makeachamp.com/andrew. This year I made the campaign more specific and
directed to achievable goals: qualifying for the US and European Open
events. These are some of the biggest competitions in the world (read: just below X-Games and Olympics) so doing well at them would be huge for me. These are ambitious but attainable goals with a lot of hard work. With the support of this campaign I'm excited to give it my
best shot!

The guys at MakeAChamp contacted directly to ask if I would like to run a campaign on their site. They're been amazing, providing feedback and information to help make the campaign a success. I really enjoy their website's ease of use.

I like to make my videos as entertaining as they are informative. The idea for the creative was inspired from an idea that my girlfriend Frida has. I was already heading out to Tofino for a surfing trip with my best pal Kyle so it worked out perfect. Skateboarding is definitely not my forte but I would like to think I'm a little better than the video implies. Coincidentally, my surfing skills improved a lot on the five days we were out in Tofino... I'm now only half rubbish!

Another point of interest this year was that I really wanted to increase the value of the Givebacks. I want to give back as much as I can to all the amazing people who help me out! I have a cool AM logo now so I've decided to make toques and sweaters in addition to the amazing products my sponsors (Westbeach, Spy, Travel Roller, MyPakage, Mio Global, Muscle MLK, Pacific Coach, RFLF Co) are providing.

For more information and to get involved please visit www.makeachamp.com/andrew.
Guten tag!

I'm in Europe now to start off my season. As I
mentioned below I've had a bit of down time to work on some edits.
However what I didn't mention is the challenge it's been trying to get
them online with limited access to internet, especially when I keep changing the edits! I'm a bit of a perfectionist...

So here's what when I think my edit is the way I
want it I put in online. Then I show some friends and realize that I
want to change something or I miss spell my girlfriend's name (sorry
babe!). A 2 minute edit takes over an hour with high speed internet to
upload in 1080p. When I was visiting Frida at her photo school in Sweden
she didn't have internet in her dorm room so I would have to wait until
she was done school and convince her to stay there for an extra hour or
two so that I could upload my video, again.

After re-uploading about 5 times with small changes I got a bit sick of my
edit so I decided to try it with a different song altogether. Here's
what I came up with. I think it fits the part a bit better. What do you
think??

It's been a fun but very busy summer. In the past week I've finally got a little down time to do some editing. This year I had more footage than ever thanks to my coach Joe McAdoo getting seriously stoked on filming and the fact that we got in so much great riding this year. Its one of my favourite videos so far but there's always the feeling of "ah, if only I had that trick on film!" I guess that's why there's always next year... until then, let me know what you think!

Hey everyone!

My competitive season wrapped up last week with a great event and a strong performance! I finished off my fourth competition in sixteen days with a the Dew Tour Am Series - a new event on the TTR World Snowboard Tour. The course, which was at Sun Peaks, was challenging with three jumps and three rail features. Consistency is key with a long course like this. Thankful that's one of my strong suits.

I qualified for the finals in 2nd place by doing sticking with the same strategy as Nationals - landing a less difficult run very well. In the finals I was up against 10 invited riders as well as 9 others who made it through the qualifiers. Despite the devil on my shoulder telling me "try your hardest tricks in finals! Go for the win!" I was fortunate to have my coach Joe reassuring me again that doing easier tricks is perfectly fine when you do them really well. When I landed my second run really clean I knew we made the right decision. My run scored me ahead of some really talented riders including a couple guys on the National Development Team! Good enough for 5th place.

Congratulations to (current and former members of my snowboard club respectively) Molly Milligan as well as Darcy Sharpe for placing first! Another club member Anthony Stefanizzi place just ahead of me in 4th place. I have to give credit to my coach Joe helping us do so well this year. The results speak to Joe's ability as a coach as well as his longterm strategy paying off.

Next up for me is to take advantage of the great spring snowboarding conditions and refocus on my progression. Ah, the never ending quest of pursuing excellence... you've got to love it!
My coach Joe has been getting really into filming this season. He's the guy ripping beside us, sending it off the knuckles, all while keeping us in frame and the camera steady. Now he's a triple threat - coach, cinematographer and producer. Check out his edits from our last 2 trips Austria and Colorado. Nice work Joe!
While many people in Canada dread the dropping temperatures and snow that eventually signals the start of winter - I can’t wait. In fact, this year I didn’t wait. I just got back from Europe where I got an early start to my winter. We were snowboarding on what seemed like the top of the world. The glaciers in Austria are able to stay open year round because of their elevation of 3,000 meters!

This year we followed the tips we heard through the grapevine about a snowboard park with a 5 jump line in October. That’s amazing for a time that is typically spend waiting for the snow to fly in North America. I got some great training in but struggled with some lower back pain which limited my riding.

After 2 weeks we packed up and drove halfway across Austria (not that far) to Dachstein for my first competition of the year. It was a 4 star TTR slopestyle course with 2 rails and 3 jumps. Despite very challenging conditions and dealing with my injury, I was happy with how I rode in the competition. It just wasn’t my day though. My last run came down to the last jump on an inverted 720. The trick didn’t come around properly and I fell.

The level of riding was very high because there aren’t any other competitions at that time of year. It was great to see what the international field was throwing down in their runs. Now its time for me to get out there and learn the tricks I need to consistently make the finals at events like that. I’m heading to Colorado for another training camp in a weeks time to do just that. I can’t wait!

After my go to resort Snow Park closed down this year I was skeptical about riding at Cardrona Alpine Resort. They stepped up their game and had one of the most on point park crews I have ever seen. Our coach Joe made the trip to NZ for the first time this year. He was really stoked to film some dynamic shots of us. "I think follow camming is my new favourite thing!" Check out the video below. You can definitely tell he was as stoked to get the film our tricks as we were to do them.
Hey hey,

My buddy Aaron Santos (check him out http://aarondevours.wordpress.com/) put together a nice teaser for his upcoming video. So nice, in fact, that it got on Snowboarder Magazine's website (http://www.snowboardermag.com/videos/white-wash-teaser/) It's kind of a big deal to get some coverage on their website. It's my first time as well as Sam, Jesse, Kyle and Aaron's. We're (almost) famous! Thanks Aaron!
We had a great time riding this spring! The slushier snow enticed us to try some new tricks. When the conditions are right sometime you've got to go for it. One day Kyle and I were both trying double cork 1080s. Kyle came super close whereas mine needs some work. But anything can happen... Beyond Boarding (http://beyondboarding.org/) is an amazing nonprofit organization of snowboarders who are passionate about giving back to the community. I'm stoked to get involved with them. One of my good friends Tamo Campos started it a while back as a way to use his creative and athletic talents in snowboarding to make a difference in the world. My roomate Sam Weston has been helping out since the summer and he's recently got myself and Kyle involved. Check out the 3 of us riding Grouse Mountain in Beyond Boarding's latest edit below. Thank you Andrew Santos for filming us and slicing the edit together!

Overall the World Championships were a great experience. I landed some good runs in practice despite very challenging conditions. The weather
was -30 for both the training day and the competition. On the first day I was the first one to show up for practice and the second last to
leave. I guess everyone else was scared of the cold, or maybe the jump,
in fact probably both! A lot of people dropped out of the competition
because the setup was sketchy: very icy and a lot of compression before
the jump. I was happy that I was able to overcome the challenging
conditions and still give it my best shot.

The crowd was huge for the
event. My parents and brother there in the front row. It was awesome to
have their support there. I knew that I need to step it up for this
competition and when you're pushing your limits - doing tricks that you
aren't very comfortable with - there's a bigger risk of not landing.
That's what happened to me. I rolled the dice and it didn't go my way.
Instead of looking at it as a letdown I'm taking away a lot of positives
from the experience... I just competed in my first World Snowboard
Championships! I'm really motivated and excited about the rest of the
season. Now I've got some time to ride hard and learn some new
tricks before my next big competition the Canadian Shield at Blue
Mountain on February 23.
